State Agency Reports

State Agency Reports Pursuant to Code of Virginia § 51.5-136(B)(6) (2015)

Virginia, like the nation as a whole, is becoming older and more diverse. There are approximately 1.5 million adults in the Commonwealth who are over 60 years old, and this population will expand to more than 2 million by 2030, when one in every four Virginians will be over 60 years old. By 2030 the entire baby boom generation will be between the ages of 66 and 84. The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) is required to develop and maintain a state and federal Four -Year Plan for Aging Services for the period 2015-2019. As part of that planning process, the state statute requires the Secretary of Health and Human Resources, in coordination with DARS, to request an analysis by every state agency of the impact of the aging population and the agency’s response. The four-year plan statute requires in part “[a]n analysis by every state agency of how the aging of the population impacts the agency and its services and how the agency is responding to this impact. Such analysis shall be provided to the Department every four years and on a schedule and format determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Resources in coordination with the Department.” Code of Virginia § 51.5-136(B)(6). The state agency reports are invaluable information in assisting DARS craft its Four-Year Plan for Aging Services.
